I anxiously awaited the arrival of this new one but when it arrived I couldn't program it. I couldn't see spending $100 for an item that wouldn't do more than a $20 coffeemaker so this went back to Amazon. I have an older Krups coffeemaker and love it. It made good coffee but none of the other features would work.
The machine will make coffee every day at the set time without having to be set, unless it finds no water in the chamber. I'm not a coffee connoisseur, so I have no opinion as to whether the filter system makes better coffee -- I just know the coffee is good. There is also a setting for 1-3 cups, which I tried successfully. The thermal pot keeps coffee hot and fresh for a very long time without "cooking" it for hours and wasting electricity. I have no regrets for having purchased this maker and would do so again. The setup is not completely intuitive -- I actually had to read the directions -- but it's not difficult after reading through it once.
The only critique I would have is that after you twist the lid of the thermal pot to unlock it, the lid lies pretty flush with the pot and could be easier to remove -- the only thing that kept me from giving it 5 stars. This attractive Krups unit has many fine features. The water chamber is easy to fill, and the basket pops out easily with a lever, then lifts out to dump grounds or wash. Pouring is easy.
He advised that I pull the tube off the unit (press down and unhinge it from the top) and drain it and start over. It is impossible to imagine that this escaped their notice during testing. He was hesitant in offering this information, and when I finally pressed him to state definitively that there is a known problem in the water level design, he began to backtrack, but he had already said it. I have been very happy with Kurps in the past, but this unit is unusable and they need to fix it or get it off the market. This is not a small problem. Vote with your wallet and buy from someone else, then call Kurps and tell them why you did, or tell them why you've returned it. I called Krups and spoke with someone who said they've had a problem with these bubbles. Both my units have the bubbles in water-level gauge problem. The bubbles are large and long and can't be tapped out. He said the first complaint from consumers on this model was that the gauge responded too slowly in showing the water level, so Krups made some design alterations and now they have a bubble problem. That worked for several days.
USA: 1-800-526-5377. I am returning my second FMF 5 today (not bought from Amazon). It is impossible to tell how much water you've added. This unit will add 10 minutes to your coffee making routine as you try to figure out how much water you've added.
The stainless steel carafe keeps the coffee hot for hours, without making it stronger or burnt tasting (there is no warming burner). So many of the coffeemakers are now black with stainless steel, which wouldn't look as good in our kitchen as the white does.I look forward to years of use of this coffeemaker. This coffeemaker offers ease of use (very easy to fill with water without spilling all over, and fill the basket with coffee grounds) and ease of cleaning (completely accessible to clean out the grounds and drips of coffee). However, because of the design of the carafe, it is very difficult to pour out the last 1/2 mug of coffee without removing the lid.I really like the white color of the coffeemaker and carafe with the staineless steel.
We were looking for a replacement thermal carafe coffee maker that would provide good service and keep our coffee piping hot. This Krups maker has met all of our expectations.
